Flight Goals

    Pre-Flight Tests
  1. survive Martian nights
  2. communicate with the rover, and send data to Earth
  3. pass the rotary blades test, this test unexpectedly required a software upgrade
    5 Flight Tests
  1. 4/19/21 | the First Flight | Schedule | Attempt
    1. Mission:
      1. Rise up to 3 meters,
      2. turn 96 degrees clockwise,
      3. Land in the same spot as take off.
    2. Rover tested that the images of Ingenuity are timely captured, hard to do because each craft has it's own clock.

  2. 4/22/21 | the Second Flight | Schedule | Attempt
    1. Mission:
      1. Rise up to 5 meters (16.5 feet),
      2. Fly 2 meters (7 feet) to the east and back, airspeed at 0.5 meters per second
      3. Made three turns, totaling about 276 degrees
      4. Land in the same spot as take off.
      5. Remained airborne 51.9 seconds
    2. Rover will try to capture more video and images

  3. 4/25/21 | the Third Flight | Schedule | Attempt
    1. Mission
      1. Rise up to 5 meters (16.5 feet), same as second flight
      2. Fly 50 meters (164 feet) north, airspeed at 2 meters per second, (about 4.5 mph)
      3. return to Wright Brothers Field,
      4. and land in the same spot as take off.
      5. total flight time of about 80 seconds and a total distance of 100 meters (330 feet)
    2. Rover will try to capture more video and images

  4. 4/28/21 | the Fourth Flight | Schedule | Attempt
    1. Ingenuity's Mission
      1. Rise up to 5 meters (16.5 feet), same as second & third flights
      2. Ingenuity covered 872 feet (266 meters) of ground and reached a top speed of 8 mph (13 kph) during the 117-second jaunt
      3. Ingenuity also took 60 photos with its downward-facing navigation camera and five with its 13-megapixel color imager while aloft
    2. Rover's Mission:
      1. Perseverance carries two onboard microphones,
        • and the rover attempted to record sound of Ingenuity's flight today for the first time.
        • We'll have to wait until more data comes down to see if that did indeed happen.
        • Did the Rover's microphones will pick up any sound from Ingenuity as it takes off, flies, and lands ?
      2. Waiting on more data ie: pics, videos.

  5. Date TBD | the Fifth Flight | Schedule | Attempt
    1. Ingenuity's Mission
      1. Land at the new landing sight,
        • Flights four and five serve to transition Ingenuity to the new phase, operations demonstration phase
          • which will kick off at an entirely new locale.
          • The helicopter will fly to that to-be-determined new site on sortie number five, which is expected to take place in about a week after FRI 04/30/21.
        • reserve
      2. either fly faster, or further, from a longer distance, to purposely test its limits, but not past its limits because of the extended mission.
    2. Rover's Mission:
      1. If not tested yet, see if the Rover's microphones will pick up any sound from Ingenuity as it takes off, flies, and lands.
    3. reserve
  6. Date TBD | the Sixth Flight | Schedule | Attempt
    1. Ingenuity's Mission
    2. Rover's Mission
  7. reserve
